Completed in 2007, Hong Yi Plaza instantly became one of Shanghai’s iconic mixed-use development due to its strategic location at the starting point of East Nanjing Road pedestrian boulevard and its proximity to and magnificent views of the Bund. Ten years later, 3MIX was commissioned to update the center’s retail and office facilities in time for its tenth anniversary celebrations and to stay competitive to its adjacent developments. Several dynamic ideas were initially proposed to enhance the central atrium’s “egg-shaped” volume and create a year-long celebratory ambiance. The current design recently completed takes a more restrained approach and focused on detail, materiality and nuanced palettes to create an inviting and comfortable setting giving the retail stores higher prominence and visibility.
